Several tours took Gugg to his beloved Italy, the home of the great masters of the Renaissance, which he revered above all and who were his models. He traveled for weeks in the company of his students or family members as well as with the well-known photographic artist Walter Hege, who initiated him into the art of photography. Thus, a part from his painting activity, he produced numerous through-composed black-and-white photographs on glass plates, and later on roll film, mainly of landscapes and people, which he presented to the public in slide lectures.
