Hugo Gugg taught from 1921 at the School of Visual Arts in Weimar, where he lived until his death in 1956. His house, a former old farmhouse at Merketalstraße in Oberweimar, was fenced with a stone wall, similar to a monastery wall.
His hospitality was legendary.
Whether students, artists, celebrities, strangers, beggars, and of course his children with families, all were welcome and found shelter in this simple retreat with adjoining studio where visitors get surrounded by the scent of dammar and mediums. The big pig leather guest book, which is sadly missing since the sixties, would give an eloquent testimony of the special atmosphere of the house.
